Having posted a contribution to the current primary education linked blogging theme about Topic work, my mind wandered over a number of issues which I had managed to overlook in the first part, so, rather than leave things unsaid, I thought part two was needed.
In my own mind, being of an independent disposition, I have always linked independence with capability. It’s a part of life skills, with home and school examples such as dressing and undressing, toileting, teeth cleaning. Parents seek to make their children independent within the home and praise efforts to do so. It makes for an easier life if your children can do some things for themselves.
Independence is embedded in classroom organisation, for example the accessing and return of necessary resources. Again, easy access and return removes the need for a teacher or TA to undertake more mundane tasks.
